Ironically I wrote this little piece last Sunday during a Sunday School class that got waaaaay off the topic. So I'm posting it in response to Heath's comment.
Am I the only one that doesn't clean their min-van? I believe that the correct term for cleaning my mini-van is "shoveling" it out. On any given day you can probably feed an army with the food dropped in my car. Think of it this way--I have the food part covered for my emergency kit. All you have to do is dig around on the floor. You might find: goldfish, raisins, toast, crusty peanut butter sandwiches, fruit snacks (these might be stuck in the carpet), candy, crackers, dry cereal, hamburger bun, french fries, etc. For some reason the idea of a garbage sack in the car is completely foreign to myself and my children. They open their burger, give me the wrapper as I try to drive down the road-and I look at it as though I have no idea what it is, then crumple it up and throw it on the floor. This is a great method until Ben gets in the car (or heaven forbid I have to give someone a ride without 24 hour notice). Now, Ben is not impressed with my method of collecting and storing food for the emergency kit, but that's not the problem when he gets in the car. (He's a good husband and chooses not to comment on the mess). The problem is that now I'm sitting in the seat that I have just thrown the trash in. Now, the shoveling out takes place about once a month, or when my dad comes and takes pity on me (or my car?). Sometimes I break the once a month deal if I get embarrased when I am in a parking lot with both sliders open and the breeze blowing through is blowing garbage out and around. One day we had to pick up a little girl from the bus stop. It crossed my mind that maybe I should clean out the van, but really...the girl was in first grade, why bother. Mistake. The first thing she said when she got in the car was that my car was messy. I liked Henry's reply: "It keeps away the robbers." Evidently they can't imagine that there is anything valuable in that mess. Note: they are right. Now, the outside of my van. First there's the dent in the passenger side slider that was there when we bought it ($1000 if I want it fixed). Then one day about 18 months ago Samuel scratched tic-tac-toe into the passenger side door with a rock. Also, at the beginning of the school year I was leaving Henry's school and looking behind me to make sure I wasn't backing over some unsuspecting kid and as I was turning the wheel and looking backwards, I hit a post on the front driver side. It's a great van though. I love it...warts and all.
